Samsung, Micromax dominate Indian smartphone market in Q3: IDC

Samsung and Micromax continue to dominate the Indian smartphone market and the companies accounted for 44 percent of the total smartphone shipments in the country last quarter. According to latest report from research firm IDC, a total of 23.3 million smartphones were shipped in India in Q3, 2014, up 27 percent quarter-on-quarter and 82 percent year-on-year.  The country also emerged as the fastest growing smartphone market in the Asia-pacific region during this period.
Coming to the company-specific shipments, Samsung was responsible for 24 percent of the shipments, followed by Micromax with 20 percent, Lava and Karbonn with each 8 percent and Motorola with 5 percent. Others accounted for 36 percent of the market share.
IDC notes that the big numbers in Q3 were mainly because of the festive demand and the vendors are likely to have left with inventory going in Q4, thus the next quarter won’t see huge growth.
Among other observations, the research firm states that the demand for phablets is stagnating but is likely to rise as 4G roll-out picks pace next year and the consumers have better access to access media on the go.
